A solar system is connected to your home’s electrical circuits through your home’s breaker panel and then to the grid through your electric meter. Energy is provided by daily sunshine, which is captured by solar panels secured to your roof (or ground mounted) on aluminum racks. Each solar panel processes energy gained from the sun into DC current; which in turn, is converted to the AC current needed to power your appliances. Excess energy generated is sent to the grid. Because the solar system is tied to the grid, it automatically shuts down during grid outages to stop energy, which could injure utility repair workers, from being sent to the grid. As a result, a grid-tied system is not usable for standby power.
Energy produced by the system to power your home, as well as any excess energy your system produced that was sent to the grid, can be used to offset the cost of energy provided by your power company. This arrangement is referred to as “net metering.” Each power company has a different program for net metering and a different amount of energy cost that can be offset by their customers, so it is best to check directly with your energy provider as to the availability and policy for your particular location.

A solar energy system with battery storage works in an identical manner to a grid-tied system as far as how energy is gathered, processed, and provided for your appliances’ electrical needs. The difference is that when excess energy is produced, the system initially uses that excess energy to charge the battery system to ensure battery energy is available during periods of darkness and grid power outages. Only when the battery system is fully charged does it feed excess energy to the grid. During a grid outage, energy from the battery system can be used to power your home during the time the solar system is automatically disconnected from the grid to ensure the safety of utility repair workers. Solar energy produced during the grid outage is used to recharge the battery system.
